Frequently asked questions
How is this different from a normal word counter?
Most word counters show one flat reading-time number, usually assuming 200 words per minute for everyone. This tool adjusts reading time for reader level (child through expert), content type (fiction reads faster than technical writing), and the detected script - CJK, Arabic, Cyrillic and Indic text are counted and paced differently than Latin text.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. All counting and analysis happens locally in your browser with JavaScript - your text is never sent to a server, even when you load a file.
What file types can I open?
Plain text (.txt) and Markdown (.md) files. You can also just paste or type directly into the box.
How is content type (fiction, academic, technical, business) detected?
The text is scanned for patterns typical of each type - dialogue and narrative verbs for fiction, citations and scholarly terms for academic writing, code/math symbols for technical content, and business terminology - then the closest match sets the reading-speed multiplier.
Does it work for languages other than English?
Yes - it detects Latin, CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean), Arabic, Cyrillic (Russian/Slavic) and Indic (Hindi/Tamil/Bengali and others) scripts and paces reading time differently for each, since CJK text is counted per-character rather than per-word.
